The research project on the middle classes in Quebec and Canada consists of a series of three research notes, the aim of which is to analyze the evolution of inequalities based on the size and composition of these middle classes, in order to shed light on the debates and decisions that mobilize this concept, which is sometimes poorly defined and subject to interpretation. The debate about the middle classes and their importance is increasingly recurrent in the social sciences and in the public arena. But while the concept is often mobilized, there is little consensus on its definition, its evolution or the measurement of its size and economic weight.<\/p>\n

The Observatoire qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois des in\u00e9galit\u00e9s has published the first in a series of three research notes that take stock of what is known about the middle classes, particularly in Quebec and Canada. This work is based on a literature review and on the analysis of some secondary data drawn, among others, from Statistics Canada\u2019s 2019 Financial Situation Survey.<\/p>\n
